A stormy night with Jack, who isn't a hurricane. He's been lying on the floor in the middle of the road, awaiting the loud noise his mother had promised him he'd hear when the lightning finally hit. Jack is four, and he's adopted. His birth mother died when he was two. He hasn't seen his birth father in years. The roof won't stop raining, the neighborhood is looking more stormy every minute. A big, dark cloud is looming, ready to receive the dark bulb of lightning. Jack waits. He's feeling sad because his mom is late, and he misses her terribly. He misses the way she used to run into the house and say, "It's starting to storm! I'm going to sit out on the porch and wait for the thunder and lightning, okay?" Jack doesn't have a porch; he never did. It was covered with a green awning his mom used to call her porch, but that went away when the shelter house opened two years ago. Now the shelter house has a big shiny sign that says NO CROWDS, and that's what Jack is waiting for. He's not a crowder. He wants to be safe and dry. While Jack is still standing there, a dark spot appears on the porch roof. Jack watches in awe. "Go, go, go, lightning!" he says to himself. And out of the darkness comes a bolt of electricity that strikes the lightning bulb like a fastball, and the dark bulb explodes and begins to burn. The big, black cloud winks out, and Jack sees the bolt of lightning on the porch roof, even though it's invisible now. At last, the storm is over. The rain stops. It's getting light now. Jack knows he should go back in the house and eat breakfast. He tiptoes into the house and looks into his mother's room, but her bed is empty. Jack tries the kitchen, but it's empty, too. Jack runs back f30f4ceada
